10 Ways to Write Better Poetry

Poetry is a type of literature work in which the expressions of feelings and the ideas are given. In other or more simple words, poetry is basically ‘River of Thoughts’. The thoughts that manifest the true feelings of an individual and the thoughts that express one’s personality. Writing a poem is an art in itself. Here are some tips to improve writing poetry:

1) Know your goals

You should have a clear idea about what you actually want to write. The goal for which you are writing a poem should be clear enough to you in order to write a poetry that directly reaches the reader’s heart. Thoroughly know and read about the topic that you want to write on.

 

2) Try reading new poems on a repeat mode

To write better poetry one should keep reading new poems so as to get an overview about how actually the poem is written by the poets and to have an idea about how and in what direction can the imagination of the poet flow.

The more you read, the more you get in the poetic mindset.

 

3) Choose a perfectly silent and comfortable place

Expressing your feelings on paper is not an easy task. Not every person can do that. Hence, to comfortably let the thoughts flow, and express whatever comes through, find a place that is silent enough.

 

4) Expand your vocabulary

Words with deep meanings are the soul of a poem. To keep yourself updated with new words that could be used in poems you need to keep yourself updated with new words. The quality of words increase the depth of meaning in a poem. Make dictionary and Google your best friends!




 

5) Try to convey your ideas in a creative manner

Writing poetry with all your creativity impresses the readers very much. A poem’s creativity and uniqueness is directly proportional to the number of readers a poet gets on his or her poetry.

 

6) Keep yourself fresh enough

Being in a fresh mood gives an individual a positive energy to think and hence the individual can think easily and faster. Hence, to write a poem you should keep your mind fresh and open.

 

7) Use your imagination

Imagination has no limits…

To be a good poet and to write better poetry, one should have a good imagination power. Only humans have the tendency to use their imagination in any way that they want, so make the best use of it.

 

8) Keep yourself calm

A calm mind thinks better. Whatever the topic be, a calm mind can always focus better and be efficient.

 

9) Use metaphors and similes

Using metaphors and similes in the poem make a poem more interesting and read worthy. Use them to create those much needed twists and turns.

 

10) Keep the rhythm of the poem balanced

Keeping the rhythm of the poem balanced is one of the most important ‘poet needs’. The number of words you use in each line should be in proportion to all other lines to give it a balanced feel.
