Daenerys Targaryen has finally reached Dragonstone. Even though it roughly took her 59 hours and 18 minutes of running time to achieve the same, she ultimately has amassed the armies, ships and all the support she needs to acquire what is rightfully hers, or at least that is what she believes. We now know about Jon Snow’s true parentage, proving his claim to the throne to be more concrete. Nobody knows what will happen in the future, we can only guess. But there are things which have been written, and cannot be refuted now. The history and culture portrayed in the world by George R.R. Martin can hint on the impending events that are about to occur, as the whole world watches.

Westeros and Essos game of thrones

A map of Westeros and Essos

So the world of Game of Thrones is divided into two continents namely, Westeros and Essos, the former being more concentrated on. Each continent has had its own share of civilizations being established and eventually eradicated. Aegon’s Conquest brought about a distinct change to how things had happened, and never had an eastern king ever tried to conquer an entire continent all on his own. So when the Targaryen king set about to conquer Westeros along with his sisters Visenya and Rhaenys, he brought about a change of events, concurring every timeline to mention dates in relation to the conquest itself.

The First Men (12,000 years before Aegon’s Conquest)

The “First Men”, an ethnic group from Essos travel to invade a place originally thought to be inhabited by the “Children of the Forest”, Along with giants and other magical creatures. They travelled through the “Arm of Dorne”, a land bridge which once used to connect south-eastern Westeros and southwestern Essos. Greenseer’s (Wise men who ruled the children) tried to disrupt the invasion by using the “Hammer of the Waters” to break the land bridge, but their attempts were futile as obsidian weapons and magic succumbed against the technological advancements the First Men boasted of. As time went on, the First men pushed into Westeros deeper and deeper, instituting paltry kingdoms along the way. After thousands of years of warfare, the children of the forest and the First Men finally agreed to a peaceful co-existence, signing the pact on the “Isle of Faces”, located near Harrenhall. Through the pact, the First Men continued to colonize the open lands while the children inhabited the forested areas.

The Long Night (8,000 years before Aegon’s Conquest)

A period of darkness and terror, the Westerosi describe it lasting a generation. It brought about a winter lasting for years, and along with it, the “Others”. The Others, or the White Walkers emerged from the northernmost parts of Westeros wielding razor-thin swords of ice. Along with them came the army of the dead, or the “Wights”. The children of the forest and their allies, the First Men, fought valiantly against them, but were driven southwards by their advance. The Long Night concluded with the ‘Battle for the Dawn’, a legendary clash before which it had been discovered that weapons made of “dragonglass” could kill them. Multiple accounts of “Azor Ahai” and the last hero are heard of, but nobody is certain of their correspondence. According to legends from “Asshai” and followers of the “R’hllor”, Azor Ahai forged the Lightbringer, a burning sword by driving the sword into the heart of his lover. We’ve heard multiple accounts of the Azor Ahai coming back again, mostly from Melisandre, but only time will tell. After the others were defeated, “Bran the Builder”, with the aid of giants, the First Men, and perhaps the children of the forest, raised the Wall, a monumental fortification of ice and ancient magic, to shelter the realms of men from the menaces of the north.
