New Love
I mocked those who said- love you baby, see you faster than you can say…
I found their passion temporary, their longing hard to buy
I wasn’t a cynic, just broken hearted- I laughed because I couldn’t understand
I felt if I hadn’t felt it, it meant it didn’t exist
I found you though- open and welcoming- your smile and warmth made me believe
You didn’t say, you showed and then you said so much too
I thought it would last only a while- but as soon as the words ended- they had to sometime- the actions did the work
There was comfort in your presence and value in your absence
The challenges, much easier every single time
The birds had never chirped so loudly, the pushy commuters became brothers in arms
I was nicer to people, even those I didn’t know too well
Your warmth made me kinder, your kindness and love made me warmer
I tried harder, fought gentler and found true peace
Now I look at those who said, love you baby, see you faster than you can say..
And smile along with them, a secret, knowing smile
I appreciate and understand their longing, I feel their love, it resonates with me
And I thank God for you for helping me see them – just as human, just as ordinary- better than before
Their love now is an example that good exists, their impatience beautiful and touching
Because I know now how it feels…
You know poetry has never been my thing but this touched me!
